GREENWICH, Conn. -- Icy conditions caused a 27-car pileup overnight in Greenwich, leading to a nearly three-hour closure of Interstate 95, the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Department reported via Twitter and Facebook.

The multi-vehicle accident occurred between Exits 4 and 5 just on southbound I-95 after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The accident occurred on the Mianus River Bridge during an overnight sleet storm, the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Department reported.

Six people were injured and transported from the scene by ambulance, the fire department reported.

A number of wreckers made their way to the scene to clear the cars from the highway bridge. The accident was cleared, and the road reopened by 2 a.m. after the bridge was sanded, DOT said.

Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 Command allowing traffic that is on the bridge to clear the bridge single file and low speed. State DOT trucks en-route to sand the bridge.
