Early on Thursday morning, July 24, police arrested Greenwich resident Matthew Defruscio, 22, after he was found asleep behind the wheel of his heavily damaged 2012 Ford Focus on Fountain Terrace with the keys still in the ignition.
It took police several attempts to awaken the driver. According to the report, Defruscio had been drinking at a bar in Stamford and drove a friend home to Scarsdale. After observing him struggle to present his license and registration, officers found substantial damage to the front and side of the vehicle, which was smoking and incapable of operation.
According to Police Officer Anthony Gaudio, who was at the scene, “the defendant was unsure of what his vehicle struck or where he has struck any objects.” Following a brief investigation, officers found a damaged guardrail nearby with a piece of the vehicle’s bumper.
Defruscio slurred his speech, had bloodshot, watery eyes and alcohol on his breath when speaking to police at the scene. He then failed standardized field sobriety tests and was unsteady on his feet after being assisted out of the damaged vehicle.
“During the Walk and Turn test, he failed to complete any heel-to-toe steps as demonstrated and started the count of the steps at three, not one,” the report reads. “Finally, during the One-Leg Stand, he had trouble with his balance and counted improperly.”
After struggling to properly take an Alcosensor test, Defruscio was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated and refusal to take a breath test, an infraction. He was released to his parents on $250 and is due back in court on Wednesday, July 30.
