One lane of the Post Road remained blocked off at about 3:30 p.m. as police and fire officials remained on the scene in downtown Fairfield.

The Fairfield Fire Department got its first call at 11:38 a.m. about the blaze at Engravers World at 1555 Post Road, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Tracey said.

Fire and dense smoke was coming from the back of the store when firefighters arrived.

Within two hours arriving, firefighters were able to put out the blaze, Tracey said. But they continued to deal with hot spots after 2:30 p.m., he said.

Engravers World and Fairfield Clothiers both sustained extensive fire and water damage, Fire Chief Richard Felner said. No injuries were reported.

Two crews were on the scene at about 3:30 p.m., helping the fire marshal with the investigation as well as working to get documents and other items for the owners of the businesses affected by the fire, he said.

"I saw the fire jump from one window to another and saw flames coming out through the windows," said one witness from a nearby office building near the scene.

Behind the building, police have also blocked off a portion of the road for the Fire Department as it cleans up its equipment and fire debris.

The nearby Chef's Table restaurant posted a sign in the window that it will reopen at 7 a.m. Friday. "With a great big thank you to the Fairfield & Bridgeport Fire Departments and all others that helped," the sign said.

"I don't think that the fire marshal has determined anything," Tracey said. "He is still investigating the cause."

The Fairfield Fire Marshal’s Office was investigated the cause of the blaze, which appeared to “originate in the first floor storage workroom in the rear of Engravers World”, according to Fire Marshal Bill Kessler.

The owner of Engraver's World, Al de Vidas, told the Fairfield Citizen that a coffee pot sparked the blaze.

"It was the coffee pot, it just melted and the fire started in seconds," he told the Fairfield Citizen. "I called 911 and they came right away." (Read the full story from the Fairfield Citizen here.)
