The incident began at 1:07 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, when Stamford Police received a call that a burglary was in progress at 37 Sutton Drive W., Lt. Diedrich Hohn said in a statement.
The caller said a person wearing white pants, an army jacket and a ski mask entered the home through a side window, Hohn said.
The witness then saw another masked man in the yard and a black SUV circling the road as the suspects were on the property, Hohn said..
When officers arrived, the witness said the vehicle and its occupants had just left the area, he said.
A description of the SUV was broadcast to officers, Hohn said.
A short time later, Officer Ryan McAllister saw a black BMW SUV hastily pull out of a parking spot and take off at a high rate of speed onto Crystal Street, Hohn said.
McAllister saw the SUV pull into the rear parking lot of 5 Peveril, where he activated his lights and approached the suspects, Hohn said.
The passenger got out and discarded something underneath a nearby fence, he said.
He was identified as Mateo Gallego-Gomez, 23, and he was wearing white sweatpants and an army jacket, Hohn said.
The driver of the SUV was identified as Agustin Zoletto, 20, he said.
Both were detained at the scene.
Officers searched the home and found a side window ajar and a rear door open, Hohn said.
The homeowner and residents said several items worth a total of $2,000 had been taken, he said.
McAllister recovered several of the missing items inside the vehicle and another item behind the fence where Gallego-Gomez was seen hiding something, Hohn said.
Also inside the vehicle were two black ski masks, gloves and garbage bags, which police believe were all in the burglary, he said.
Gallego-Gomez and Zoletto were arrested. Both were charged with second-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny, and conspiracy.
Zoletto, who drove the getaway car, was also charged with reckless operation and operation with no license, police said.
Each was held on $50,000 bond for arraignment Thursday at Stamford Superior Court.
