The Darien Police Department investigated three overnight commercial burglaries at Frates’s Liquors at 1937 Post Road in December 2016 and February 2017.
In all three incidents, the suspect smashed the front widow using a rock and then climbed through to gain entry, police said. Once inside, the suspect removed cash from the registers.
Investigators from the Darien Police Department believed that the same person was responsible for all three Darien burglaries.
On Aug. 25, the Stamford Police Department apprehended a man who was in the process of committing several overnight burglaries, police said. These burglaries were all similar to the Darien incidents.
The suspect was identified as Thomas Golterman, 46, of 41 Martin St., Stamford.
Based on surveillance footage and further investigation, Darien detectives determined that Golterman was responsible for burglaries at Frate’s liquors on Dec. 28, 2016, and Feb. 19, 2017. The burglary on Dec. 15, 2016, remains under investigation.
On Sept. 28, Darien detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant for Golterman in connection with the two burglaries.
Golterman has been in the custody of the Department of Correction since August. Arrangements were made to bring him to Stamford Superior Court to face the Darien charges.
At 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, Golterman was arrested by Darien Detectives and charged with:
- two counts of third-degree burglary,
- two counts of sixth-degree larceny and
- two counts of third-degree criminal mischief.
Golterman was held on $150,000 bond. He will appear in again court for the Darien charges later in the month.
