Officers responded at 1 p.m. Thursday to the Gulf Service Station on South Avenue.
Employees told police that Robert Lenkowski's van had beeb towed to the service station and he owed $254. He told employees that he would return in two hours to pay for the tow, police said.
Workers shortly thereafter saw the van pulling out of the service station, police said.
New Canaan Police contacted the Norwalk Police Department, which found Lenkowski and took him into custody, police said. New Canaan officers went to Norwalk to issue a misdemeanor summons, police said.
Lenkowski was charged with sixth-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear in court on Oct. 6.
