Police Identify Worker Killed In Westport Construction Accident

WESTPORT, Conn. -- The man killed in a construction accident in Westport Tuesday afternoon has been identified as Herbert S. Grant, 69, of Stratford, according to police.

The accident took place at around 12:21 p.m. when Grant was working at a construction project at a residence on Country Lane in Westport. Police said Grant was supervising the pouring of concrete when he was struck in the upper body by a boom extending off the front of a concrete truck.

Police, firefighters and EMS arrived on scene to provide medical aid. Grant was taken to Norwalk Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries, police said.

Grant was an independent contractor who hired the concrete company to deliver concrete to the job site.

On-site investigation of the accident concluded at around 10 p.m., but the incident remains under investigation by the Westport Police Detective Bureau, with assistance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, state police, Fairfield police and Trumbull police.

Police said the exact cause and manner of death will not be available until an investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
