An officer was traveling on Brookside Road at around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5 when he saw a car on the side of the road with its hazard lights on. The officer stopped to check on the driver, who said that his battery light came on and that the car "just died." The officer detected the smell of marijuana as he was talking to the driver, police said.
The officer asked for the driver's name and date of birth, and the driver said his name was "Jesse Turner" and that he was born on Sept. 21, 1992. The officer checked that information but DMV records showed no matching record, police said. The officer asked again for his date of birth and age, and the age that he gave did not match with the date of birth, police said.
At this point, the officer asked him again for his true identity, and he said his name was "Rashad Smith" and that his ID was from New York, not Connecticut, police said. He said he was nervous, which is why he had lied about his identity. Police checked the name with New York DMV records, but again came up with no information, police said.
Police told the driver that he was being detained until he could be positively identified, and asked if there was anything illegal in the car. He said there was a spliff in the center console, police said.
While searching the car for marijuana, police found a wallet with the name "Jaurean Reid" on the information contained in it, police said. When asked about it, the driver said Jaurean Reid was his brother, police said.
When confronted again about his constantly changing identity, he admitted that his name was Jaurean Reid, police said. He told officers that he had attempted to use his cousin's name and date of birth, but didn't think he got the information correct, according to police.
Reid was arrested and charged with criminal impersonation, interfering with an officer, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana. Police said that a search of his car turned up a scale and ashtray, both with marijuana residue on them, as well as a marijuana cigarette and a ziplock bag with 2.5 grams of marijuana.
Reid was released on a $2,500 bond and will appear in court on July 19.
