GREENWICH, Conn. -- A plumbing contractor from Milford was in serious condition in the hospital after a large tree fell on him Friday afternoon in Old Greenwich, police said.

Greenwich firefighters removed the man from underneath the tree, and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service paramedics began offering him aid, police said.

The man had been preparing to get into his vehicle when the tree fell on him around 1:15 p.m., police said.

Benjamin Street has been closed to traffic, and the Greenwich Tree Department is on the scene to remove the tree.
