DARIEN, Conn. — A 47-year-old Stamford man was charged with violating a protective order after he began to "follow" someone online whom he been ordered not to contact "in any manner," Darien police said.

The victim met with officers at Darien police headquarters on Aug. 1 and said Gregg Karas had violated a restraining order, police said.

The order against Karas was issued by a Superior Court judge on June 29. It said, in part, “Do not contact the protected party in any manner” and “do not threaten, abuse, harass, follow, interfere or stalk the protected person,” police said.

The victim reported receiving a notification email from a popular online “app” that indicated that Karas had started “following” the victim online on or about July 18, police said.

The victim also recounted an incident in which Karas had threatened the victim and also said Karas had been seen driving by a store numerous times on July 2 while the victim was inside shopping, police said.

An arrest warrant was immediately sought and issued for Karas' arrest, police said. The arrest warrant was served at 9:10 a.m. Aug. 1 at Stamford Superior Court, and Karas was returned to Darien Police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

He was charged with violation of a restraining order, second-degree harassment, and second-degree threatening. He was released on $25,000 court-set bond for an Aug. 2 court date.
