GREENWICH, Conn. -- An off-duty Greenwich police officer found the 43-year-old town man in the roadway who was killed by a hit-and-run driver late Sunday , the Greenwich Time reported.

The victim was found lying in the street at East Putnam Avenue and Hillside Road, near Greenwich High School, shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday, Greenwich Time said.

Police were continuing to search for the driver who hit and killed the Greenwich man, whose identity has not been released.

Police said that evidence recovered at the scene reveals the suspect's vehicle is a 2006 or later Mercedes-Benz M Class car. It will have a damaged silver honeycomb grill with the Mercedes-Benz logo in the center of it. The damage to the grill is on the right side, police said.

The color of the vehicle is unknown.

Anyone with information on the car or on the accident is asked to contact Greenwich police Officer Roger Drenth at 203-622-8014.

The man's name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.
