Janet Villafane, 27, was charged with leaving a child unsupervised. She will appear in court Sept. 15.
Police received a report at 12:49 p.m. Wednesday that two small children had been left inside a parked car outside an eyeglass store on Connecticut Avenue.
Villafane was shopping in the store while her 1-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter were inside the car, police said.
According to police reports, Villafane was in the store for 10 to 15 minutes and left the store after another customer came in and said, "Those poor children are sweating so much."
Witnesses provided the license plate of the car, which police traced to Villafane, who had left by the time officers arrived, police said.
Officers went to Villafane's house and met with her. Police said the children were playing in the house and were not injured when they arrived.
Offices spoke to Villafane, who said her children had been sleeping so she decided to leave them in the car with the windows open, police said.
She said she parked the car in front of the store and kept an eye on them while she shopped, according to police reports. She was issued a misdemeanor summons.
