Norwalk Police Step Up DUI Enforcement

NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Police Department will add patrols starting Thursday in an effort to reduce the number of driving under the influence incidents through the holidays, officials announced.

The extra patrols will be stationed throughout the city during the week and on weekends, and they will be paid for through a grant from the state Department of Transportation, according to Sgt. Lisa Cotto. The amount of the grant, which pays for overtime for officers to staff the patrols, was not disclosed.

Additionally, Cotto did not disclose the streets officers will patrol, in part because the department does not want to tip off drivers, and because the initiative does not involve designated roadblocks.

Cotto said that the number of drunk-driving incidents often increases during the holidays, and the department hopes that the added patrols will reduce the number of “crashes, injuries and fatalities.”

“We are committed to keeping our streets safe and drunk drivers off the roads,” Cotto said.
