The checkpoint will take place from 7 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday. Officers will focus on removing drivers operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with the goal of reducing the number of motor vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities in Norwalk. Additional officers will also be roaming the city, specifically looking for drunken drivers.

According to police, the most recent data shows that 67 percent of DUI crashes occur during the weekend, and that Connecticut has a higher percentage of alcohol-related fatalities (46 percent) than the national average (36 percent).

"Always remember to pick a designated driver if you are going out drinking," Norwalk police said.

The DUI checkpoint is made possible through a grant from Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles Highway Safety Office.
