NORWALK, Conn. – A 27-year-old convicted felon from Norwalk received a 57-month prison sentence for illegal gun possession, Connecticut’s acting U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly said Thursday.
Antoine Laws was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven. After his 57-month imprisonment, Laws will have three years of supervised release. As a previously convicted felon, Laws is not permitted to possess a firearm.
Daly said that according to court documents and statements made in court, Laws was arrested by the Norwalk police in the Roodner Court housing complex on Ely Avenue on June 6, 2012, after he was found in possession of a .25-caliber ACP semi-automatic handgun. The gun was loaded with hollow-point ammunition, and Laws was also caught with an undisclosed quantity of crack cocaine.
Laws was previously convicted of burglary, narcotics and firearms offenses, according to Daly. He has been detained since his arrest, and in January he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.
In addition to Norwalk police, the case also investigated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, pursuant to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative in Norwalk, according to Daly. The agencies launched an initiative late last year to fight gun crimes.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah P. Karwan.
