The burglary at the home on Smith Ridge Road was reported at 5:20 p.m. Aug. 15, police said. The resident said the doors and windows were locked while they were gone for the day, police.
But when the resident returned, items had been "disturbed' in the home, with someone entering through a window, police said.
Multiple pieces of jewelry, with a total value of $1,800, were gone, police said.
On Aug. 17, a Darien resident reported an attempted home burglary and gave police a license plate number, police said.
Norwalk police tracked down the car and the suspect, Sioni Bonilla, 35, of Ely Avenue in Norwalk, and an accomplice, police said. A search of Bonilla's car turned up the "distinctive" jewelry that had been stolen in the New Canaan burglary, police said.
New Canaan officers questioned Bonilla and his accomplice, and they confessed to the Smith Ridge Road burglary, police said.
New Canaan police obtained a warrant for Bonilla's arrest and went to Norwalk court Tuesday to arrest him.
Bonilla was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary, third-degree larceny and third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny. He was held in custody of the Norwalk court.
Bonilla’s accomplice is expected to be arrested soon, New Canaan police said.
