An officer saw Julian Andres Santa, 34, fail to stop for two red lights at Tokeneke Road and Center Street and then swerve into the oncoming lane on twice on his Vespa scooter, police said.

He was also not wearing eye protection while operating the scooter, police said.

When the officer stopped the Vespa, he detected the odor of alcoholic beverage on Santa's breath, police said. Santa's eyes were also glassy and red, police said.

When asked to perform field sobriety tests, he failed to perform to an acceptable standard, police said.

Santa was arrested and transported to the Darien Police Department for processing. The scooter was towed.

Officers then discovered there was an outstanding warrant for Santa's arrest from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office in Florida for violation of probation and DWI, Darien police said.

Florida authorities confirmed they would extradite Santa, who admitted that he had been arrested in Florida for DWI earlier this year.

Santa was then charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, failure to obey control signal, no eye protection, operating without a license and being a fugitive from justice

Bond was set at $25,000 for the Darien charges and $250,000 for the Florida charges. He was held for arraignment on June 26 in Stamford Superior Court 26.
