William Gaviria, 59, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive right. He was held on a $10,000 bond and will appear in court Aug. 4.

The arrest stems from a crash on Butler Street on May 30. Gaviria was driving his car with one passenger when he crossed over the line and crashed head-on into another car. The driver of the second car suffered an injured arm and the passenger of the second car suffered a head injury, according to police reports.

When police arrived on scene they found Gaviria lying on the curb bleeding from the forehead. His passenger had wandered off, and was found nearby with bruises left by his seat belt during the crash, according to police reports. Police said that it did not appear that Gaviria had been wearing a seat belt, and there was a crack in his windshield where it appeared his head had hit it.

When police spoke to Gaviria, he had red, glassy eyes and gave off an odor of alcohol, according to police reports. He was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Police searched his car and found several empty and full beer cans, and said that beer had sprayed on the ceiling and walls of the car as a result of the crash.

A warrant was issued for Gaviria's arrest. On Monday he came to the police station because he believed that police had some of his property. While he was there it was discovered that he had an active warrant, and he was taken into custody.

Gaviria has been arrested several times in recent months. On May 14 he was charged with driving under the influence, having weapons in his motor vehicle and threatening after police said they found him asleep at the wheel of his car in the middle of an intersection. During that incident, police found a machete in his car, and later while he was in custody he threatened to cut an officer's head off, according to police reports.

Less than a week later, Gaviria was arrested again. Police said that on May 20 he had an outburst on his front lawn, and when paramedics arrived on the scene Gaviria kicked one in the genitals, according to police.

Gaviria was also arrested on June 9 after he was found lurking around a softball game at Norwalk High School, according to police reports. He was charged with second-degree breach of peace and interfering with an officer in that incident.
