The driver, Jackson Pierre-Louis, called 911 himself shortly after midnight after he had been stabbed multiple times, police said.

Officers responded to Grove Street, where he had crashed the cab he was driving into a parked car, police said.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and treated Pierre-Louis, who was transported to Norwalk Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m., police said.

Police could not specify Monday morning whether any money was taken or whether the assailant had been a passenger in Pierre-Louis's cab. The Detective Bureau has taken control of the investigation.

"This is early in the investigation," said Lt. Paul Resnick of the Norwalk Police Department on Monday morning. "Detectives are on the road as we speak, speaking to people, following up every lead and working the case."

Pierre-Louis was driving a dark-colored minivan taxi owned by Norwalk Yellow Cab Inc., Resnick said.

Detectives are looking to speak with anyone who may have ridden in the cab earlier in the night, he said.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington, police said.
