The car fire, which was reported between Exits 28 and 27 at 1:35 p.m. Thursday, caused the southbound lanes to be closed completely for about 35 minutes, police said. The blaze was extinguished by the Greenwich Fire Department.

The southbound Merritt Parkway was partially reopened by 2:10 p.m., but Greenwich police warned of long traffic delays in the area on the parkway and on side streets.

Police cleared the accident scene and reported that there were no injuries in the accident. Connecticut State Police took some time to investigate and clean up, Greenwich police said.

The southbound Merritt Parkway had been closed at Exit 28 with traffic being diverted onto side roads, said Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray. It has had a significant impact on local roads, he said.
