The drill will begin at 8 a.m. and should last until about 1 p.m. During the drill, area residents may hear activity from the school, such as gunshots, as part of the tests, town officials warned.
New Canaan residents will experience minimal disruption during the drills because no streets will be closed, officials said. However, access to the middle school will be closed, they said.
Residents and other people in the area should not go to Saxe Middle School to watch the drills in progress, New Canaan officials said. A perimeter will be set up around the school to prevent people from doing so, town officials said.
The town recently updated its security manuals and wanted to practice the procedures, said Michael Handler, director of the Office of Emergency Management. The town conducts the training every few years, and although Newtown experienced a real-crisis situation in December, it is not the reason for the drill.
“We did it before Newtown and we will probably be doing it long after,” Handler said.
