When police arrived on the scene, they saw Alexander Martin, 53 of Bridgeport, standing with the cart next to a car in the parking lot.
The store's loss prevention had stopped him from leaving but the woman was not there. Martin refused to give police the name of woman who had been with him.
Police say there was $354.53 in miscellaneous groceries in the cart that Martin had left the store with.
He later told the police that he had met the woman earlier that day while getting drugs.
Martin was charged with sixth degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth degree larceny. He was released on a written promise to appear in court on Aug. 14.
