With that in mind, police Lt. Kraig Gray is raising public awareness for being a careful homeowner.

“These burglaries are occurring both during daylight hours and during the overnight period. We have made adjustments to our patrol patterns to address the uptick,” Gray said.

People want to windows open when leaving their homes during the summer's warm weather, but the reality is that it leaves residences vulnerable, he said.

Also, when traveling, don't post the dates you'll be away on social media, but do enlist a neighbor to keep an eye on your property and collect your mail. Be aware of door-to-door solicitors as well.

A handful of the deterrents suggested by the department, include leaving the home in a 'lived-in' state and having either a dog or a 'beware of dog' sign on the property.

Of course, the department also suggests leaving your valuables in safety deposit boxes and installing alarms, video cameras, motion detection and timer lights.

Contact the department immediately if you notice any suspicious activity.
