Greenwich Police Officers Honored For Stopping Speeding Boat

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Marine Technician Sean Fox and Officer Frank DiPietro were named officers of the month for August in Greenwich for their efforts in bringing an unmanned boat under control.

At about 8 p.m. July 19, two occupants were ejected from a cigarette speed boat traveling about 50 mph after the boat hit a large wave off the coast of Stamford. The boat continued traveling unmanned at high speeds across Long Island Sound, posing a danger on the water and along the shoreline.

Marine law enforcement Units from around the region, including Greenwich, responded and made numerous attempts to stop the out-of-control boat but failed. The decision to board the boat was made.

Fox took the controls of Police Boat 139 and matched the course and speed of the out-of-control boat. DiPietro then boarded the boat by jumping the gap between the two boats.

Once aboard, DiPietro brought the vessel under control. At great personal risk, Fox and DiPietro successfully brought the incident to a conclusion.

"For their courage, dedication to duty, and display of extraordinary skill they are awarded the August 2013 Officer of the Month," the Greenwich Police Department said in a statement.
