Hansen, a Greenwich native and a second generation Greenwich police officer, is the son of retired Detective Robert Hansen Sr., and between them they have served the Town of Greenwich for a combined 53 years, Heavey said.
"Bob has lived up to the Department’s vision to improve the quality of life within Greenwich while at the same time maintaining respect for individual rights and human dignity. We are fortunate that Bob will retain his affiliation with the Greenwich Police Department as a Special Police Officer. I wish Bob the best of luck in all his future endeavors," said Heavey
Hansen started with the department in 1987. He was promoted to accident car investigator in 1999, and from 2002 until 2005 served as a public safety dispatcher. Hansen was a member of two highly selective and well sought after specialty teams at the Greenwich Police Department: The Special Response Unit and the Scuba Team.
Hansen has received Chief Commendations for investigations and apprehensions of suspects from burglaries to bank robberies. In February of 2009, he was recognized by the chief as the Officer of the Month for his dedication to duty while searching for an elderly woman with depression and dementia who had wandered off. On a bitterly cold night, Hansen located the women shivering and suffering from hypothermia. She was hiding behind bushes in a snow bank. If not for Hansen’s diligence and persistence, the woman would have inevitably suffered even greater injury and potentially death.
For many years, Hansen was able to blend his love of baseball with his professional desire to help the community. He volunteered his personal time for years as the head coach for the department sponsored Babe Ruth Baseball team, using this position as an opportunity to interact with the town’s youth as a positive role model and mentor. Most importantly, his efforts have resulted in letters of sincere gratitude from citizens thanking him for his professionalism and kindness.
