Greenwich Police Investigating Fires As Arson

GREENWICH, Conn. — Two fires at a home under construction on Winthrop Drive in Greenwich appear to have been set intentionally, police and fire officials say.

A neighbor put out the first fire, which broke out inside the home, around 1:30 a.m., on Wednesday, officials said.

"A neighbor noticed a fire next door, they ran next door and were able to knock down the fire," Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray said.

The neighbor used water and gravel that had been laid as a foundation for the garage floor to douse the fire, Fire Marshal Jim McDonald said.

Because of the fire, police were patrolling the area the next night around the same time when a fire was spotted at the front door of the home, Gray said.

Firefighters put that fire out.

"It's unusual to have the same spot tried two nights in row," McDonald said.

The fires caused damage to the home, but it was not significant, officials said.

"Both fires are pretty clearly intentionally set," McDonald said. "There is a crime of arson involved should they catch somebody."
