GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Greenwich Police Department will hold a firearm turn-in event at the Greenwich Public Safety Complex on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre.

Greenwich Police always accept unwanted firearms, but it will be the fifth such advertised event since the tragedy in Newtown.

Greenwich police will accept any rifles, shotguns, assault weapons, nonoperational weapons, ammunition, carrying cases, holsters, BB/pellet guns and any other additional dangerous weapons, such as swords or knives at the event.

Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray has said previously that the majority of guns turned in are simply "unwanted" and have been in the family.

The event is a collection and not a buyback, so no compensation will be given for turning in a firearm.

Residents can even call the Greenwich Police Department and an officer will go to your house to pick up the firearm if the resident is uncertain how to handle it.

All firearms must be unloaded and transported in the trunk of a vehicle or in a box or bag. Ammunition should be in a separate container from the firearm.

Contact Detective Anthony Fiscella at 203-622-8021 for more information.

The Greenwich Public Safety complex is located at 11 Bruce Place.
