The Greenwich Police Department Marine Section, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and the U.S. Coast Guard are joining together in an intensified effort to detect intoxicated boaters and enforce boating under the influence laws in Connecticut.

"Boating under the influence continues to be a major factor in accidents and deaths on our nation’s waterways," the statement read.

Greenwich Police Department Marine Section Officers will be conducting BUI focused enforcement and saturation patrols on Long Island Sound and educating the public on the hazards of boating under the influence. Officers will be using portable Intoxilizers to detect any presence of alcohol while conducting the vessel stops.

Since being launched in 2009 by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators in partnership with the Coast Guard, the percentage of boating fatalities with alcohol named as a contributing factor has decreased from 19 percent to 17 percent.

All 50 states now participate in the annual Operation Dry Water.

The Greenwich Police Department anticipates a safe boating season and reminds mariners to utilize the Marine VHF Channel 16 in the event of an emergency.
