It was the second turn-in event the police have held this year.

Greenwich police collected nine long guns, seven pistols, three BB rifles, one pellet pistol and "lots" of ammo to be destroyed, according to public information officer Lt. Kraig Gray.

"The end results speak for themselves," Gray said. "It was a convenience we provided to the public. It’s our duty to accept unwanted firearms."

Although Greenwich police have always accepted unwanted firearms, this year's two turn-in events were advertised after growing concern about guns after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Before the event in February, Gray said that in many cases, the weapons have been in a family for multiple generations and they either do not want it anymore or do not know how to use it.

"Anytime anyone’s interested in turning in a firearm we’re willing to take it and destroy it, because that’s our duty," he said. "Even one person coming in takes that one weapon out of use. We’re happy about that."

Greenwich police accepts unwanted firearms at any time during the year, not just at advertised turn-in events, he said. They can always be turned in at Greenwich Police Headquarters during normal business hours.

Another turn-in event will be held at the headquarters in the fall.
