Officers were called to a North Water Street residence on the report of an intoxicated man, with a pit bull dog, yelling at passing motorists and pedestrians at about 6:30 p.m., police said.

When officers arrived, they discovered the dog had run away from the home but had been returned by a neighborhood friend, police said. The man then began to yell at the dog and kicked it three times, police said.

Lavar J. Ferguson, 37, of 14 N. Water St., was charged with one count each of cruelty to animals and disorderly conduct. He posted bond of $10 and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Dec. 22.

The condition of the dog was not reported.
