New Canaan Police were dispatched to Smith Ridge Road at around 4:45 p.m. Sunday on a report that a car had gone off the road and hit a rock wall and the guide wire for a utility pole, police said. The crash knocked out power to more than 1,000 customers in the area.
Police determined that the driver, 50-year-old John Yang of Greenwich, was driving southbound on Smith Ridge Road when he went off the road. Yang could not recall what would have made him go off the roadway, other than saying that he may have fallen asleep, according to police.
Yang was issued a misdemeanor summons for reckless driving and failure to drive in the right hand lane. He posted a $240 bond and will appear in court on May 4.
