All you need to do is drive up to headquarters where officers will accept any unused or expired medications from 8 a.m. to noon. Liquid medications and needles will not be accepted.

The effort is part of a national drive to rid households of dangerous drugs that children or teens may get their hands on. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, last year, more than 3,800 federal, state and local counterparts took in more than 702,365 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted drugs at more than 5,000 collection sites across the United States. This year is the 11th event since 2010; cumulatively, these events have collected 5,525,021 pounds of drugs.

According to a 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.5 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. That same study showed that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

The Greenwich Police Department is at 11 Bruce Place.
