Fairfield Man In Custody After Lockdown At University Of New Haven

Update 4:45 p.m.: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A man from the town of Fairfield was in custody in connection with a lockdown at the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon, according to Patch. com .

A shelter in place order remained in place for everyone on the West Haven campus and evening classes were canceled after a man was reportedly spotted on campus with what appeared to be a rifle, according to the college's Twitter account .

The suspect was in custody by Tuesday afternoon, according to the university, however the shelter in place order was still in effect.

Fairfield Police were at the individual’s Stratfield Road home after being contacted by the West Haven Police Department, Chief Gary MacNamara told Patch.

The university sent out an emergency message on their Twitter account telling students to “shelter in place [all caps] and await further instructions.”

The Tweet stated that the West Haven Police Department was searching for “an Asian male near South Campus with what appears to be a rifle.”

MacNamara said he anticipates West Haven police to arrive and conduct a search of the home.

No further details, including the name of the suspect, were immediately released.

UNH posted the order on its Twitter account just before 1 p.m. and said the suspect was in custody about 30 minutes later.

The university's twitter account says police were conducting a "methodical search" and that all students and faculty should remain where they are.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
