Elderly Man Charged In Norwalk Car Burglaries

NORWALK, Conn. – A man was arrested in Norwalk the night before his 73rd birthday for allegedly breaking into cars and stealing electronics, police said.

Police received a complaint Monday night from a resident of Flax Hill Road saying an older man had gone into a car. The owner went out and yelled at the man, who then left the area. Police arrived and encountered Wilfred Hamilton, 73, of Bridgeport down the road.

Police reported one officer stayed with Hamilton while another went to go talk to the complainant. Hamilton then tried to flee, according to police reports. The officer arrested him.

While searching Hamilton, police said they found two cell phones, two sets of wireless headphones, a Garmin GPS, a satellite radio receiver and a radar detector. The officer hit the “Home” button on the GPS, which reportedly indicated it belonged to another home on Flax Hill Road. Police contacted the owner, who discovered the door to his car was ajar and the GPS was missing, police said.

Hamilton was charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, felonies, as well as two counts of third-degree criminal trespassing, two counts of sixth-degree larceny, and interfering with an officer, all misdemeanors. He was held on a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to go to court Aug. 24.
