The accident occurred between Exit 40 and Exit 41 northbound just before 8 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Chris King said.
When Norwalk Fire units arrived, they found the Jeep Cherokee was engulfed in flames. The male driver, the only occupant, had been removed from the vehicle by another motorist before the passenger compartment became involved in flames, King said.
The driver was treated by state troopers and firefighters until a Norwalk Hospital ambulance arrived, King said. The extent of his injuries were unknown at this time.
The Merritt Parkway was shut down for while the fire was put out and the accident investigated, King said.
Connecticut State Police were investigating the cause of the accident and had the road reopened by about 9 pm.
