The boy’s uncle contacted the Department of Children and Families on Friday morning after receiving word that the boy was home alone. The child’s father, who was on a business trip at the time, had learned over the phone that the boy was home sick from school, and his mother had left him unattended, according to the police report.

Officers arrived at the house and found the door locked, police said. The child answered their knock and told officers that his mother was not home, and he was not allowed to let anyone inside, according to their report. Police contacted with the mother, a 33-year-old Darien resident, who was working as a babysitter for another family at the time, according to police reports.

She returned home and told officers that she had gone to retrieve her employer’s child from New Canaan, and had only been gone 45 minutes, the police report notes. Officers had already been on scene for more than an hour at that time, police said.

The woman was charged with a risk of injury to a minor, and released on the condition that she not contact with her son until after receiving approval from the Department of Children and Families. Her son was turned over to his uncle temporarily. The child she was babysitting was returned to her parents.
