The incident took place at around 11:22 p.m. when 19-year-old Nelson Santiago confronted his ex-girlfriend outside a residence on Dewey Street, police said. Santiago used a knife and stabbed the woman several times before fleeing the scene, according to police.

An officer saw Santiago a short distance away from the scene and apprehended him after a brief foot chase, police said.

Santiago was charged with attempted murder, second-degree stalking, breach of peace and interfering with an officer. He was held on a $1 million bond and brought to court Tuesday morning for arraignment.

Police said the ex-girlfriend was treated at Bridgeport Hospital and is in stable condition.
