The incident started at about 1 p.m. Tuesday when a man later identified by police as Lamonte Riddenhour, 38, of Mount Vernon, N.Y., drove a Honda Accord into several vehicles on Greenwich Avenue in downtown Greenwich, police said.
The wreckage was spotted by an off-duty Greenwich police officer, who called in to headquarters to report it. As he was doing so, a couple -- identified later by police as Georgesia Humphrey, 32, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Emanuel Price, 40, of New Rochelle, N.Y. -- approached him and Humphrey told the officer her Honda Accord had been stolen, police said.
Riddenhour was spotted in the damaged Accord at the bottom of Greenwich Avenue at Railroad Avenue and taken into custody, police said.
However, Humphrey's story about her car being stolen soon began to fall apart, police said.
Officers determined the three individuals all knew one another and that they had been in Greenwich to shoplift items at a CVS, police said.
Police said Humphrey had a bag fitted out with aluminum foil that would circumvent store security devices and that she had some CVS items in her possession.
Humphrey was charged with falsely reporting a motor vehicle theft, conspiracy, sixth-degree larceny, possession of a shoplifting device and interfering. Her bond was set at $7,500.
Riddenhour was charged with five counts of evading responsibility and one count each of reckless driving, interfering with an officer, conspiracy, making a wrong turn and operating without a license.
His bond was set at $10,000.
Price was charged with making a false statement, interfering with an officer and conspiracy. His bond was set at $5,000.
They are scheduled to appear in state Superior Court on Feb. 25.
