Greenwich Letter: Vote Republican In 150th District Race

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Greenwich Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Please send letters to greenwich@dailyvoice.com

To the Editor:

Democrat Jill Oberlander, running against Republican Mike Bocchino for state representative in Greenwich’s 150th District, keeps pressing an argument that, since Democrats have a majority in the state legislature, Greenwich needs to elect a Democrat to Hartford “to have a seat at the table.” She never mentions that the Democrats’ majority is mostly due to winning all 18 seats representing Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford. Her argument seems to be that if voters in those cities elect  Democrats, then Greenwich voters need to follow their lead and do the same.

By this theory, we would essentially be letting voters in the cities decide our elections in Greenwich for us, all to enhance one-party rule by Democrats.

Why would we do that? Curiously, not even Ms. Oberlander seems to believe in the strength of her own argument. Connecticut has five members of Congress, all Democrats, in a U.S. House of Representatives with a Republican majority. Does Ms. Oberlander therefore believe we need to send a Republican to Washington so that Connecticut can “have a seat at the table” in the U.S. House? Judging by her own contributions of $7,500 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the past 24 months, apparently not. Greenwich voters don’t need to take their cue from other towns or cities to select their state representatives.

Electing a Democrat who is a New York-only attorney (Ms. Oberlander is not admitted to the bar in Connecticut) and adding to Democratic one-party rule in Hartford will not reduce spending, lower our taxes or undo the damage that Democratic overspending, overborrowing and overtaxing have done to Greenwich taxpayers and to Connecticut’s economy.

Electing Republican Mike Bocchino to join our outstanding Hartford delegation of Scott Frantz, Livvy Floren and Fred Camillo will guarantee that Greenwich will speak with a united and strong voice for fiscal responsibility in Hartford.

Please vote Republican on Nov. 4 for Mike Bocchino. Jim Campbell
