SIMSBURY, Conn. - William Gordon Pendergast of Simsbury, formerly of Greenwich, died Thursday, Aug. 7. He was 79.
Pendergast was born Feb. 5, 1935, in Greenwich, to William Joseph and Margaret (Doran) Pendergast and lived in Old Greenwich for 51 years before moving to Simsbury two years ago.
He received his bachelor's degree from Fordham University and his MBA from Iona College. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the ROTC program, he served in U.S. Army's 192 Field Artillery Battalion and was discharged as captain in 1966. He was the founder and president of Contemporary Personnel Services Inc. in New York City and New Jersey.
He served as past president of the New York Association of Temporary Staffing; a past vice president of Innis Arden Golf Club, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the Harpoon Club; and was a longtime member of the Rocky Point Club. He was a member of St. Clement of Rome Church in Stamford, serving as president of the parish Lay Board under three pastors and was a former teacher in the religious education program.
Pendergast is survived by his wife, Marghan (Wright) Pendergast; children, Michael Graham Pendergast (Mary Ann) of Simsbury, Patricia Ellen Dilbarian (Roger) of Framingham, Mass., and William James Pendergast (Casey) of Malvern, Pa.; seven grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sandra Pendergast; and a niece and a nephew. He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel R. Pendergast.
A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Clement of Rome Church, 535 Fairfield Ave., Stamford. A burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich.
