GREENWICH, Conn. - William Arthur Phillips of Greenwich died March 27. He was 88.

Phillips was born in 1925 in Providence, Rhode Island. He served in the United States Marine Corps from August 1943 through April 1946, seeing combat in the Pacific theater. He graduated from Brown University in 1950, and earned a degree from the University of Connecticut Law School in 1954. He was admitted to the Connecticut and New York Bars. He was an attorney at Greenwich-based Hirschberg, Pettengill & Strong and was a partner in Moore, Phillips & Duncan (formerly Moore, Phillips, Hull & Duncan) of Greenwich.

He was an honorary member of the executive committee of the Connecticut Bar Association, and member of the Anti-Trust Trade & Regulation, Federal Practice, Business Law, and Litigation Sections. He was a member of the Litigation and Business Law Sections of the American Bar Association, and practiced before the U.S. District Courts of Southern & Eastern New York and Connecticut, the U.S. Court of Appeals Second and Third Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Phillips was a resident of Greenwich since 1984, he became a member of the Greenwich Rotary Club in 1969, served as club president from 1997 to 1998, and in later years oversaw the rewriting of the club's by-laws and constitution.

Phillips is survived by his sister, Mirium Clayton of Epping, N.H.; daughter, Pamela (Richard) Noonan of Chatham, N.J.; two granddaughters; and his partner of 18 years, Mary Anne Cline. He was predeceased by his former wife, Patricia Blewer.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, April 4 at the Second Congregational Church of Greenwich.
