Sylvester Stanek, 79, Lifelong Greenwich Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. – Sylvester John Stanek, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, died Aug. 15. He was 79. 

He was born Oct. 14, 1932, to George and Olga Stanek. A Korean War veteran, Stanek served in the Marine Corps from 1951-54. He was a member of the American Legion in Port Chester and the Byram and Glenville Veterans Associations.

Stanek also was a sharpshooter. For more than 30 years, he worked for Interstate Artesian Well Diggers.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Susan Stanek, Chris Bolek Bonet, George Stanek, Catherine Vaslet, Wayne Stanek and Steven Stanek. Stanek was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Stanek and George Stanek; and his sister, Marie Bolek Walters.

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church in Greenwich. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich.

Memorial donations may be made to VITAS Hospice Care.
