Robert Ellis Boyer, 89, Former Greenwich Resident

YORK TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Robert Ellis Boyer of York Township, and formerly of Greenwich, Conn., died Feb. 14. He was 89.

Boyer was born Feb. 3, 1925, in York, Pa., the son of Ellis C. and Cornelia K. (Spangler) Boyer. A 1943 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, he was a staff sergeant with the Fifth Army Headquarters during World War II in North Africa and Italy, serving as a chaplain's assistant from March 1944 through January 1946.

He received a bachelor of arts degree in organ performance and music theory from the University of Bridgeport, a master of education degree from New York University, and pursued his sixth-year studies at Manhattanville College and Fairfield University. He taught music theory and choral singing for 28 years at Mamaroneck Junior High and Hommocks Middle School in Westchester County, N.Y.

He began his career as a church organist at the age of 17, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in York. He was minister of music at the Southport Congregational Church in Connecticut for more than 30 years. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross in Greenwich.

Boyer is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Shaw) Boyer; daughter, Pamela Myers (Kit) of Glen Rock; sons, R. Eric Boyer and fiancée, Renae Fowler of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Philip J. Boyer (Maryann) of Stamford, Conn.; four grandchildren; special friend, Brandon Fowler of Mechanicsburg; and sister, Joyce Eisenberger of York. He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Fern Wrights.

Calling hours are 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York. Funeral services for will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Deborah Port, pastor of Longstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, 3101 Deininger Road, York.
