Berman was was born in New York City on April 13, 1927, to Samuel and Sadie Tenenbaum. The family moved to Far Rockaway, N,Y. where was the recipient of many youth academic awards in the New York area, including ones for Latin. She became one of the younger students ever accepted to the Smith College at age 16, and she earned her degree as a Phi Beta Kappa member of the class of 1947.

She married Jim Berman on May 27, 1951.

She worked for Time Magazine, a career that began before she became a mother, and it spanned 30 years. She was primarily a researcher. For years, she was the "back of the book" rover, which meant every week she would add her assistance to whatever section of the magazine needed extra brainpower, whether it be the arts, medicine, law, travel, or even sports. She was a member of the presidential election coverage team every four years.

The family lived in Rye from 1958 until 1974 and then in Greenwich. She  served as a trustee for the Hackley School in Tarrytown and  was a connoisseur of the arts, frequently attending the symphony, opera, theater, and various museums. She also enjoyed traveling, hiking, tennis, skiing, and sightseeing.

She is survived by her two sons, Chris and Andy, and their wives, both named Katherine Berman. She is also survived by grandchildren Meredith, Doug, Sara, and Riley.

A remembrance will be held Monday, Jan. 5, at  11 a.m. at Congregation Emanuel of Westchester in Rye. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Smith College or the Bruce Museum in Greenwich. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.leopgallaghergreenwich.com.
