Michael W. Powell Jr., 79, Retired Greenwich Police Detective

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Michael W. Powell Jr., a former longtime member of the Greenwich Police Department, has died. He was 79.

Powell, a Greenwich resident, served the department from 1960 to 1987. He was a member of the National Guard from 1958 to 1964 and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. 

Powell began as a patrol officer in Greenwich. He became an accident investigator and was appointed to the detective squad in 1971. In 1978, he was promoted to sergeant. He served under six police chiefs during his tenure.

Powell gained a number of commendations through his career, including the GPD Meritorious Police Duty medal and Excellent Police Duty medal from the Silver Shield Association. 

His son, retired Detective Timothy Powell, was also a member of the department.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Dec. 17 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside. There will be no calling hours.
