Mary Wakefield Coe Lynch, Former Longtime Greenwich Resident

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Mary Wakefield Coe Lynch of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, June 6. She was 97.

Lynch was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Worcester, Mass., to Jefferson Worcester Coe and Bertha Gilman Coe. She resided for many years in Greenwich, Conn., and then Paget, Bermuda before taking up residence at 'Blue Bird Meadows' farm in Free Union.

She attended the Bancroft School in Worcester and graduated from the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn., in 1933. She attended Radcliffe College and was a cum laude graduate of Columbia University in 1957 where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to receive an M.A. with honors from Teachers College at Columbia. She later taught at the Julian Curtiss School and at Greenwich Academy in Greenwich, Conn.

Lynch and her husband were members of the Farmington Hunt Club. She was a direct descendant of John Alden and was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in The Commonwealth of Virginia. She and her husband were members of St. Paul's, Ivy, Episcopal Church since moving to the area from Bermuda in the 1980s and she was a member of The Free Union Dames.

Lynch is survived by her sons, John (Jay) Hone Bartol, Jr. (Cindi) of Alexandria, Va., and Peter Wakefield Bartol (Rose) of Charlottesville, Va., and Durango, Colo.; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three step-children; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great grandson. She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, John Hone Bartol; her second husband, Robert F. Lynch; and siblings, Jefferson Worcester Coe, Jr. and Sallie Coe Knowlton.

Funeral service and burial in the churchyard will take place at 3 p.m. July 12 at St. Paul's, Ivy (Charlottesville) with a reception to follow.
