Marie R. Van Houten, 87, Of Greenwich, Volunteered At Witherelll

GREENWICH, Conn. - Marie R. Van Houten of Greenwich died Monday, April 29. She was 87.

Van Houten was born July 17, 1925, in Newark, N.J., to Henry M. and Margaret Regan. She graduated from Spring Garden School in Nutley, N.J., and Our Lady of Good Counsel, in Newark. She received a BA in home economics from St. Elizabeth's College in Convent Station, N.J., in 1947. After marriage she lived in Kinnelon and Montclair, N.J., prior to moving to Greenwich.

Van Houten taught home economics in Newark, volunteered at The Nathaniel Witherell for 25 years, and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis.

Van Houten is survived by her husband, Leonard; sister, Jane R. Larkin of West Orange, N.J.; and children, Elizabeth M. Van Houten of Westbrook and San Francisco and Peter J. Van Houten of New Milford. She was predeceased by her parents; daughter, Mary.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at Knapp Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Ave. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 6, at St. Mary Parish, 178 Greenwich Ave. A private burial will take place the following day at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Butler, N.J.
