Lotte Mehrtens, 100, Of Cos Cob

GREENWICH, Conn. – Lotte Mehrtens of Cos Cob died Jan. 13. She was 100.

Mehrtens was born March 15, 1912, in Hamburg, Germany. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1926, settling in Cos Cob. Her family said that her proudest day was when she became an American citizen. She was an avid reader and loved to crochet.

Affectionately known as "Mama," Mehrtens is survived by two daughtes, Margaret (Robert) Kolb, of Stamford, and Elizabeth (John) Kjoller, of Cape Cod; a son, Herman Mehrtens, of Johnson, Vt.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Herman Mehrtens; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Mehrtens.

Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Greenwich. A service will follow at 11 a.m., with burial at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford. Fred D. Knapp and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Lutheran Church.
