John U. Farley, Jr., 74, Of Greenwich, Launched Farley Enterprises

GREENWICH/BROOKFIELD, Conn. - John U. Farley, Jr., of Greenwich and Brookfield, died Wednesday, Nov. 12. He was 74.

Farley was born May 1, 1940, in Chicago, Ill., to Urben and Virginia Farley. He served in the United States Army before entering the publishing industry. During the early years of his publishing career, he rose through the ranks of The Farley Company and later succeeded his father as president and CEO. After retiring from publishing in the 90's, he began investing in real estate and launched Farley Enterprises.

He was a councilman in Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and a member of the Winter Club in Lake Forest, Ill., University Club in Chicago, Ill., Princeton Club in New York, N.Y., and Greenwich Country Club in Greenwich. He also served on various boards for the town of Greenwich.

Farley is survived by his wife, Ann; children, John of Newtown, Cheryl of Greenwich and Roger of Stamford; three grandchildren; siblings, Gail Royster of Hudson, Ohio, Devin of Lake Geneva, Wis., and Susan Farmer of Orinda, Calif.

Calling hours are Nov. 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A private Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 18, for the family.
