John A. Micik, 92, Byram WWII Veteran

GREENWICH, Conn. – John A. Micik of the Byram section of Greenwich died Oct. 19 at Nathaniel Witherell, surrounded by family. He was 92.

He was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Jessup, Pa., to Andrew and Susanah Mihalith Micik. He enlisted in the Army with the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion at the age of 21 and served under Gen. George Patton. He was part of the D-Day Invasion at Utah Beach and the Battle of the Bulge.

He married his wife, Louise, on May 17, 1947, at St. Roch Church. Micik worked at Conde Nast, Elan Chemical, Clairol, New York Graphic Society and Greenwich Country Day School. He was a member of the Byram Veterans, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Armstrong Court Garden Club.

In 1996, Micik served as president of the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He enjoyed spending time with his family, attending Army reunions and playing the harmonica and accordion.

He is survived by his three sons, John (Marilyn), of Virginia, James (Joy), of Greenwich, and David (Marie) Micik, of Greenwich; two sisters, Mildred Zamfino, of Florida, and Mary Putrino, of Greenwich; a sister-in-law, Carmela Micik, of Milford; a brother-in-law, Nick Lagronegro, of Greenwich; and six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Emil and William Micik; and a sister, Catherine Szuch.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich, with a prayer service from 7 to 7:20 p.m. officiated by the Rev. John Perling. A Christian burial service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Byram. Entombment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich.
